Bookends

This summer has been incredibly packed with adventures- so many that I don't know how I'm going to blog about all the experiences. Emily once created the term "Blogshaustion"- the exhaustion one experiences when there is simply to much to blog about and Brian created the term "Blogbligation" - the feeling that you are obligated to blog about certain events. I'm feeling a little both of these emotions these days since all our fun and adventures have been getting in the way of my blogging.

The chronicle of our summer began and ended with matching bookends. We began June in Portland with the birth of Brad and Emily's Sam and ended in August with the birth of Tom and Amy's Jack. Yes, we have our 12th grandchild!

Jack Bradley Omer was born on Monday, August 30, at 5:26 p.m. in Thousand Oaks, California. Of course, all the little Spirits coming straight from Heavenly Father are big miracles, but there was an additional miracle associated with Jack's birth. Amy was scheduled for a C-section last Friday because Jack was in the breech position. But earlier in the week, he miraculously flipped and then was head down and ready to go. It was a fast delivery and mother and baby are doing great and just came home today.

Here's a peek at Amy and Jack a couple hours after the delivery.
Here's the other half of the equation that produced such a cute little guy- Tom and Jack.
Jacob, Allison, and Gideon were pretty excited to go to the hospital to meet Jack.
Uncle Brian was next in line to hold Jack.
Grandma gave up the camera to have a chance to hold this new little bundle of joy.
We were doing the math earlier today- 5 + 1 = a great family!
Jack looks pretty happy to be home with his family. What a cute addition to the family!
Couldn't resist three last shots . . .
Allison and Jack- She will be a big helper!
Gideon reading to Jack, "What animal this?"

Dr. Tanner!

Of note. . . With Emily's help, I was able to publish the post about Dr. Tanner. You can find it here.

"I'm a Big Brother!"

It's official. Trevor has paid his dues- waiting 9 long months plus 10 extra days- and is now a member of the Big Brothers Club ("The Boys"), joining Braden and Dallin. He even has an official sticker to prove it.

Samuel Brad (Sam) was born at 10:52 a.m. yesterday morning- 10 days after his due date but none the worse for his wait. He is adorable and so alert! He seems so "mature" for a newborn. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 14 oz. and was 20 inches tall.

Here are some official photos of "The Boys" and their baby brother.

Grandpa and Grandma got to hold Sam, too.

And here is the happy family, so glad that this day has finally come!

We are so excited for them!

Sleeping in Seattle

Right after we arrived at Emily's home, someone commented to her that the best way to get a baby NOT to come is for her parents to arrive. After a week, it seemed like this might be the case. We decided to test the theory, so we took the boys and got out of town for the weekend. We took the kids to visit their cousins in the Seattle area. The bonus was that we got to visit our daughter and her family, as well.

It was pretty much a party all weekend as the kids played,

swam,

ate (a lot), and slept together.

For the kids, probably their favorite activity was playing a video game "You're in the Movies" and seeing the movies that were compiled from the segments they acted out. Pretty funny! Even Grandma and Grandpa got in the act!

Two unexpected happy experiences included David cheering for Julie, Caleb, and Kate in a 5K in a nearby town and I was in Relief Society on Sunday when Julie taught the lesson.

We loved the opportunity to see our family in Seattle and, most importantly, Brad and Emily had a fun weekend together- a good thing before being "tied down" with a new baby and three very active boys! We're still waiting, but the end is in sight- Sunday, at the latest!

Straight as a Board, Light as a Balloon

On Saturday, we had a break in the weather, so we checked out the local county fair with Brad and Emily and their family. The fair was surprisingly small and and a little "honky-tonk" for a large metropolitan area, but it was pretty fun. The boys got to milk a cow. . .

watch the "dock dogs" jump into water to retrieve things. . . and hold a bunny.

Oddly, if it weren't for the rabbits, a mother sow and her piglets, and a tiny petting zoo, there would have been no animals at the fair.

The highlight of the afternoon was Professor Bamboouzle's Illusionary RoadShow, co-starring Professor Bamboozle and our very own Braden! Braden was picked because of his enthusiastic rockin' out in the audience. (Shades of "Let's Make a Deal!") Braden was the perfect candidate for the daring feat of levitation- he was exceedingly courageous when he didn't know what the Professor would ask him to do, he provided comic relief with his dancing on the stage, but, most importantly, he was "straight as a board and light as a balloon" throughout the stunt.

I have to admit the Professor bamboozled me and I never figured out how he made Braden float in the air "straight as a board, light as a balloon."

What a Difference a Day Makes!

This is what we saw outside our window yesterday morning . . .

This is what we saw outside our window this morning . . .

. . . which leaves this poor hummingbird (and us!) wondering what the heck we're doing back Utah!

Dr. Tanner!

It's not every day that you watch your son participate in graduation exercises as a new PhD! But, yesterday, Saturday, May 1st, we did just that! We got up early to talk to Brian, who was braving the crush and pandemonium of graduates trying to get on shuttle buses to get to "The Big House" at the University of Michigan. Later, he called us from the field where he and thousands of his fellow graduates awaited the festivities. After all, it was quite a "coup" to have the President of the United States as the featured commencement speaker. Many have asked us why we were not there and my sister even called us after graduation to tell us to give Brian a hug for them (she assumed we were there). Brian did not know for sure if he would attend and he assured us that we had been there for him when it was most important- for his first Dissertation Recital. So, we watched graduation by streaming video on our computer.

Though President Obama was the featured "star" of the event. . .

and gave a thoughtful speech that encouraged a return to civility (Brian's words), our focus was on the star of our show- Dr. Tanner! Somewhere, Brian is in the crowd of graduates. . .

The cameras often focused on individual graduates, but, the cameras never did find him. I can imagine that even if we were in the stadium, we would have had a difficult time finding him in the sea of caps, gowns, and quite a number of doctoral hoods. Even with the miles between us, it was hard not to get emotional as we were there in spirit to witness the graduation of our son, Dr. Brian Tanner. Both David and I got a little "choked up" as we watched the broadcast and, especially, as the candidates were presented from the School of Music. In reality, Brian had "walked" on Friday at his convocation, and we are excited to see pictures from that event.

When Brian called to tell us that he had successfully defended his Dissertation, David wanted to write an article for our local newspaper, The Davis County Clipper, about Brian's accomplishment. So we worked together to write the article and send it in. When we got our Clipper this week, we totally missed the article, because we expected it to be published as we sent it. Thanks to a neighbor, we did find out that an announcement was in the paper, but it was edited, rewritten, and "buried" on the Youth/Education page, but it was there. We would like to share the original article with our family and friends, so I've included it with this blog post. Congratulations, Dr. Tanner!

Bountiful Tenor Achieves Doctorate

Brian David Tanner successfully defended his Doctrinal Dissertation and will receive his Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Michigan School of Music, located in Ann Arbor. Brian will participate in graduation exercises to be held on May 1, 2010, which will feature President Barack Obama as the commencement speaker.

The University of Michigan’s Doctorate in Vocal Performance is a three-year program, during which time Brian served as a Graduate Student Instructor, teaching in the classroom, as well as instructing private vocal students for the University. In order to qualify for a Doctorate, a candidate must undergo a lengthy oral examination, present three Dissertation Recitals, and successfully defend his Dissertation, among other requirements. Brian’s first recital, “A Novel Approach,” featuring texts by famous authors, was sung in German, Italian, French, and English, set to music by a number of prominent Classical composers. For his second recital, Brian sang the tenor lead, Marco, in The University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s production of The Gondoliers. His final Dissertation Recital was sung in Portuguese and featured the music of several Brazilian composers. Brian developed a love of Brazilian music while serving as a missionary for the LDS Church in the Brasil Campinas Mission.

Dr. Tanner received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Vocal Performance from the University of Utah School of Music, where he studied with Dr. David Power. While at the University of Utah, Brian sang with the University of Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble and co-founded a student performing group called Zero Budget Productions, which provides additional opportunities for talented music students to perform and direct productions. Also during this time, Brian enjoyed three summers of singing with the Ohio Light Opera Company in Wooster, Ohio.

A graduate of Woods Cross High School, Dr. Tanner was the Sterling Scholar in Music from Woods Cross High School in 1999 and a 2-year member of the Woods Cross High Madrigals and Concert Choir, directed by Mr. Neil Hendriksen. While at Woods Cross High, he participated in many musical productions, with his most memorable performance as The Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. He studied 3 years with Cheryl Stone before attending the University of Utah.

Dr. Tanner is the son of David and Jan Tanner of Bountiful, who commented on their son’s accomplishment, “We are so excited for Brian. He has followed his passion and worked nine years for this achievement. We have thoroughly enjoyed following his career and remember our favorite musical experience: seeing Brian perform the role of Ferrando in Mozart’s CosÍ Fan Tutte with The Hubbard Hall Opera Theater in Cambridge, New York.” They look forward to many more memorable performances from Dr. Tanner.
